Students Going Green

What is FIERCE?

FIERCE stands for FremontIs Enabling Real Change in the Environment and was created on February 19th, 2010 when students from all five high schools in the Fremont Unified School District of California decided to come together to discuss and share projects and tips that each could implement at their own school. Since then, we have grown tremendously, becoming an organization in our own right and organizing and running interschool and district-wide environmental programs and projects. We have been joined by James Logan High School of Union City as well as several local junior high schools and are also known as "Students Going Green" (See note below).

What does FIERCE do?

We organize a variety of environmental projects and programs that involve all schools in the district and also work with outside organizations on some projects. Most of our projects are intended to increase general environmental awareness as well as to provide valuable experience to those students involved in organizing the events. See our individual committees' pages at left for more detailed information on past and current projects.

How is FIERCE organized?

We meet up once a month at one of the participating high schools (meetings rotate location) for the committees to evaluate their progress and decide on future goals. Committees also use this time to coordinate their efforts as several committees work together on most large projects. These meetings also occasionally include environmentally-related workshops by teachers and/or students, and committees are expected to meet up individually between monthly meetings. FIERCE is led by an executive council of ten students which are replaced by an application process as vacancies arise (mostly through graduation).

Note: Our original name was "Fremont Students Going Green," a name which we sometimes keep for clarity purposes, such as on our Google group. Also, since we have joined up with schools from some other nearby school districts, we have omitted the word "Fremont" from the name of this web site. However, you may consider "FIERCE" and "(Fremont) Students Going Green" to be synonyms.
